Ascension Via Christi Family Medicine Residency
50th Anniversary Alumni Bike Trip
Sept. 16-20, 2021
In 1970, St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita, Kansas took a giant step toward becoming a teaching hospital. Dr. Lew W. Purinton, medical education director, and Dr. Robert Purves, were instrumental in the opening of a three-year residency program in the newly launched specialty of Family Medicine where young physicians would be trained to care for patients within their families and communities through a new comprehensive model, which would include longitudinal training in obstetrics, pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, and psychiatry among others. The St. Joseph Family Medicine Residency was launched. The first class was accepted in 1971, making this year an appropriate time to celebrate the program’s 50th anniversary.
St. Joseph FMR merged with St. Francis FMR to become the Ascension Via Christi Family Medicine (VCFM) Residency. VCFM is still going strong because of you. Thank you for being part of this 50 year legacy and helping us continue this vital program in our community for many years to come. Please join us in Colorado for this year's annual Alumni Bike Trip in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the residency program.
Bike trip to Vail Pass
Dr. Bruce Woods was the Behavior Science Director from 1980-1996. He conceived and launched the annual Bike Trip in 1983. Dr. Woods is an avid bicycler and will be leading the bike trip up to Vail Pass on Saturday, September 18th for those who wish to join him. He will start at Frisco Park on Main Street at 9:00 am. This 14 mile ride going up will be “hard work,” but the 14 mile downhill ride will be “fast and fun!” Alternatively, there is also a much less strenuous option of being shuttled by van up to the top of Vail Pass and bicycling down to Frisco.
Alumni Gathering at Frisco Park
There will also be an alumni gathering on September 18th from 3:00 - 5:00 pm at Frisco Historic Park and Museum (120 Main St, Frisco, CO). The park pavilion and adjacent museum have been reserved for the event. There will be a brief program followed with time for alumni, current residents, and faculty to mingle. After our reserved time, each class will coalesce and have dinner at various spots in Frisco or Breck.
We sincerely hope you are able to attend this special reunion. Please email Dr. Todd Stephens (firstname.lastname@example.org), of your interest in either or both of the above activities.
Ode To Frisco Colorado
“Something must be done...COVID-19 has had too long a run.” Here is one idea…!
Let’s meet and eat, and with our feet, walk and talk, wouldn’t that be neat
We should reach each St. Joe class and gather together, such a grand mass!
Those stressful days in our residency years......our residency friends.....there were “laughter and tears”
Then we left St. Joe, the “brightest and best”..... We went North and South… We went East and West…
But we do remember, one thing we said, “Let’s get together, before we’re all dead
To Frisco we’ll go, to talk, laugh, and play, let’s just call it..the “St. Joe Way”....!
