Despite its lifesaving capability, cancer treatment can take a toll on your well-being. Side effects can leave you physically and emotionally drained. Fortunately, research has proven that exercise is safe and beneficial during and after cancer treatment. Rebuild your strength and reduce side effects with Via Christi’s Cancer Wellness Program.
Complimentary fitness assessment
Via Christi’s Cancer Wellness Program begins with a fitness assessment by a clinical exercise physiologist with a specialist certification in Cancer Exercise. An individualized exercise prescription will be written for you, and two follow-up sessions are offered for guidance.
Your fitness assessment measures your:
- Height and weight
- Body mass index
- Body fat
- Muscular strength and endurance
- Aerobic endurance
You have the option to continue with supervised exercise sessions on your own, or join the Survivor Fitness Program, which gives you full access to the gym area, all equipment and the ability to participate in group exercise sessions.

Chronic disease wellness program
Chronic diseases can take their toll on a person physically and mentally. Often they make a person feel like they have no control. You can take some control by participating in the Via Christi Wellness Program, designed to help improve quality of life through exercise, education, and peer support.
The Via Christi Wellness Center, located in the Via Christi Cancer Center, 817 N. Emporia, offers fitness and wellness services for anyone with chronic diseases such as:
- Heart failure
- Pulmonary disorders
- Morbid obesity
Physician approval is needed to participate.
Studies show that exercise offers several benefits when living with a chronic disease, including:
- Improve tolerance to medical treatments
- Increase overall strength and endurance for daily activities
- Strengthen immune system and decrease risk of infections
- Reduce pain and increase pain tolerance
- Decreased anxiety and depression
- Reduced fatigue and increased energy levels
Wellness Center participants will receive an initial, comprehensive fitness assessment of body composition, body mass index, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, which is done by a clinical exercise physiologist. From that assessment, a customized exercise program will be developed. Participants can choose from individualized exercise sessions or a monthly membership, which gives full access to the gym area, all equipment and group exercise sessions.
The Wellness Clinic is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
