Mental health services in Wichita, Kansas

Via Christi provides comprehensive behavioral and mental health treatment options in Wichita, KS in partnership with psychiatrists from the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

Inpatient services

Via Christi provides acute inpatient hospitalization services for patients who have unstable psychiatric disorders and need the most intensive forms of treatment. The goal is to help stabilize patients in a safe environment by providing them with medication management and group therapy.

A key element of the care is to provide patients with a comprehensive discharge plan, including follow-up with outpatient treatment, to prevent a relapse requiring readmission to the inpatient center.

The Via Christi Behavioral Health Center provides four levels of inpatient care:

  • Acute psychiatric care, for patients with acute symptoms including thoughts of suicide, severe depression or psychosis
  • Adult psychiatric care, where structured individual and group treatment is provided for patients with less acute symptoms and medical detoxification for chemically dependent patients is available
  • Adolescent care, designed to meet the unique clinical and educational needs of 12- to 17-year-old patients in need of crisis stabilization and short-term hospitalization
  • Care for chronically mentally ill patients
  • All services require a referral. Patients may be admitted directly to any of the behavioral health units, or may access inpatient services through the Emergency departments at Via Christi Hospitals in Wichita.

Intensive outpatient program

Treatment offered helps patients with more severe symptoms from their mental illness. Via Christi’s intensive outpatient program is operated in conjunction with Via Christi Psychiatric Clinic and provides deeper treatment for patients with more severe symptoms from their mental illness.

Providing age-appropriate care for adolescents, age 11-17, and for adults 18 years and older, it offers:

  • Medication management
  • Group therapy
  • A focus on helping patients learn healthy life skills
  • Wellness and symptom-awareness education
  • Communication skills
  • Goal-setting strategies
  • The goal is to prevent patients from needing inpatient hospitalization for their mental illness and to provide care with minimal disruption of school, work and family activities.

Patients may benefit from outpatient programs if they have:

  • A primary psychiatric diagnosis (Axis I) other than substance abuse/dependence
  • Adequate cognitive ability to benefit from educational and therapeutic offerings
  • Evening and weekend support
  • Access to transportation

Partial-day outpatient program

Intensive outpatient therapy for treating and managing mental illness. Via Christi’s partial-day program is the most intensive form of outpatient therapy for treating and managing a mental illness while allowing the patient to live at home.

It provides age-appropriate care for adolescents, age 11-17, and for adults 18 years and older. The program focuses on teaching healthy life skills with more frequent group therapy sessions than the Intensive Outpatient Program, usually several times a week. It also provides medication management services.

The program’s focus is on helping patients learn healthy life skills, including wellness and symptom-awareness education, communication skills, and goal-setting strategies. The goal is to prevent patients from needing inpatient hospitalization for their mental illness and to provide care with minimal disruption of school, work and family activities.

Patients may benefit from outpatient programs if they have:

  • A primary psychiatric diagnosis (Axis I) other than substance abuse/dependence.
  • Adequate cognitive ability to benefit from educational and therapeutic offerings.
  • Evening and weekend support.
  • Access to transportation.

Patients who need the intensive, short-term program must be:

  • Willing to participate
  • Expecting progress within a specified time period
  • Able to function safely without 24-hour medical/psychiatric care
  • Not a threat to self or others
