The Emergency Department at Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan offers high-quality medical services by physicians with specialty training in emergency medicine to 25,000 patients each year. We are equipped to handle all situations, from emergencies such as heart attacks, to other urgent illnesses and injuries.
The ER is physician-staffed 24 hours a day, with physician assistants, nurses, technicians and other staff providing additional support. With 16 treatment rooms available for a variety of emergency situations, the Department sees approximately 24,000 patients each year.
In addition to physicians who specialize in emergency medicine, physicians in other medical specialties throughout the hospital are available for consultation with the Emergency Department.
Riley County Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
Riley County EMS is is operated by Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, available 24 hours a day year-round and serves approximately 45,000 patients each year. Riley County EMS is licensed as a Type I paramedic ambulance service by the Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services.
Pottawatomie County Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
Pottawatomie County EMS is operated by Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan and serves approximately 1,600 patients each year. Pottawatomie County EMS is licensed as a Type I paramedic ambulance service by the Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services.
In addition to routine emergency services, the Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan emergency deaprtment also provides specialty community services, including:

SART (Sexual Assault Response Team)
The Flint Hills Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), offered through Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, is composed of sexual assault examiners who are specially trained in forensic evidence collection. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners are qualified to document injuries, collect evidence, ensure that victims receive appropriate medical care, and provide necessary referrals and follow-up care.

Safe Kids Riley County
Safe Kids Riley County is a local Safe Kids coalition whose purpose is to prevent unintentional injury to children. Riley County EMS, Riley County Police Department and Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan make up the coalition and appreciate the use of MFD Headquarters to hold a weekly child passenger safety seat check lane. The two main initiatives are:
Child-Seat Safety Inspections
Riley County EMS has two child-seat safety technicians who provide seat installations and inspections:
- Tuesdays, 11 am – 1 pm, Manhattan Fire Department, 2000 Denison Avenue
- By appointment, Riley County Police Department, 1001 Seth Child Road
