PACS (Synapse®)

An imaging tool for radiologists, PACS (Synapse®) is used to store radiology images electronically.

After September 6th, 2016 upgrade, there will be three methods of accessing Synapse® remotely. Two are through Citrix and one is installing Synapse® directly on a PC.  For the Citrix installation, Internet Explorer on Windows is recommended, but most operating systems and browsers are supported.

1. Through a Citrix client with native access to only Synapse.

This requires a user to navigate to the Citrix link published here:

https://apps.via-christi.org

From there, the user would select the Synapse icon to run Synapse.

If the user does not have access to Citrix or does not have the Synapse icon display, they will need to request access to Synapse on Citrix through their manager using the provisioning form.

2. Through a Citrix client with access to Synapse images through OneChart.

This requires a user to navigate to the Citrix link published here:

https://apps.via-christi.org

From there, you would select the OneChart PACS icon to run a virtual desktop that has links on it for both OneChart and Synapse PACS.  The integration between OneChart and Synapse also works on this virtual desktop allowing a user to click on the image display link within OneChart to display images in Synapse for the patient being referenced.

If the user does not have access to Citrix or does not have the Synapse icon display, they will need to request access to Synapse on Citrix through their manager using the provisioning form.

3. Through a Synapse client installed directly on the remote PC.

The install package on the web site allows Via Christi physicians (physicians with privileges at Via Christi) to access radiology images from a remote location.  It can only be used with PCs that already have a connection to our PACS (Synapse®) servers.  Below are the steps to install/upgrade Synapse®.

It is important that on each computer to be upgraded to our PACS (Synapse®) system be logged on by a person with Administrator login rights. The Synapse® Automatic Workstation upgrade will not work correctly otherwise.

Also, please be aware that this version of the Synapse client must not be installed prior to 9/7/2016.  It will not work until the Synapse servers are upgraded.

1. Verify the machine utilizes the vcpx.via-christi.org datasource by right-clicking the Synapse® icon on the desktop, selecting "Properties" and ensuring"vcpx.via-christi.org" is in the address line.

If Synapse® is not already installed on this machine, skip to step 2.

If the vcpx.via-christi.org line does not appear as below - STOP - please contact Via Christi Service Center at 316-350-3838 for assistance with upgrading. They will create a support ticket for someone to call you with assistance.

2. Verify the operating system and Internet Explorer requirements document at the bottom of this page.  Synapse WILL NOT RUN outside the specific requirements documented here.

Close all applications running on the machine.

Download and run the install file.

After a short delay a dialog box similar to below will appear - select the "Run" button to begin installation.

If you get any other prompts, please accept them.

When the install dialog box goes away, the installation has completed.

After installation completes, boot the machine.

After booting, Synapse® should run normally once the upgrade of the servers is complete on the morning of July 9, 2014. The new version of Synapse® contains a number of new enhancements but the basic functionality remains the same.

Please call the Via Christi Service Center at 350-3838 if you experience problems.

This Synapse® pocket guide does not detail changes in this release, but it does provide a good reference tool for the Synapse application in general. If you would like more information about the new features, please call Ron Griffin at 316-268-5368.
