WSU Women's Basketball to recognize breast cancer survivors at annual ‘pink’ game

If you enjoy great basketball, encouraging young women, supporting worthy causes and free tickets, you won't want to miss the Shocker Women's Basketball's annual Play4Kay game vs. the University of Houston.

This year's "pink" game, played in honor of legendary women's basketball coaching legend Kay Yow, who lost her life to breast cancer in 2009, will tip off at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24.

A limited number of tickets are available for Ascension Via Christi associates and volunteers, breast cancer survivors and their guests. Please CLICK HERE to reserve yours. Your tickets will be held at will call under your name at the Charles Koch Arena Ticket Office.

"After being first diagnosed in 1987, Coach Yow fought a 22-year on-again, off-again battle with breast cancer all in the public eye," says WSU Women's Basketball Head Coach Keitha Adams. "Her hope was to inspire others to make a difference in a fight that impacts us all and we're honored to do our part."

Game sponsor Ascension Via Christi is supporting this effort by providing special pink warm-up shirts for the team and contributing to a gift basket that will include one of the shirts and other items from Via Christi, Wichita State and the American Cancer Society. The basket winner will be chosen from those who help raise awareness by sharing WSU's pink campaign posts on social media.

One of the special guests at the game will be breast cancer survivor Paula Ring, who will sing the national anthem. It will be a particularly special event for Ring, who also will be celebrating her 20th "cancerversary" that night.

"We’re excited that WSU has chosen to recognize our sponsorship at a game that supports such an important cause," says Kim Yearout, director of Ascension Via Christi’s Sports Medicine outreach program and outpatient therapy centers. “I hope everyone comes out decked in pink for an evening of great basketball and fun for such an important cause.”

Additionally, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, WSU will host a special zoom session with the team as part of its Play4Kay game activities. The event is free.
