Via Christi to host Medical Mission at Home: A Day of Free Healthcare

Amy Seery Jalasia Brooks

Ascension Via Christi will host its second Wichita Medical Mission at Home: A Day of Free Healthcare on Saturday, April 14, in collaboration with Wichita State University, the City of Wichita and dozens of other community providers and organizations.

The event, being held this year at Mueller Aerospace and Engineering Discovery Magnet Elementary School, at 2500 E. 18th St. N. in Wichita, is part of Ascension’s Medical Mission at Home program, which across the nation continues to help ensure families’ access to care, particularly those who are vulnerable or financially struggling.

The day will start with a brief program at 9 a.m.; participants then will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 9:30 a.m. and continue until everyone who has registered by 3 p.m. has been seen. Services, all of which are being offered at no cost to participants, will include medical care and testing; dental, vision and hearing screening; foot care; community resources and health education; and connections to follow-up care. (Most services and activities are indoors this year. Patients: Please plan to arrive no sooner than 8:45 a.m. when doors to a small, indoor waiting area will open to the public. Indoor patient registrations will begin at 9:30 a.m. All patients who are registered by 3 p.m. will be seen.)

Last year, more than 500 clinical and non-clinical volunteers helped to make Via Christi’s first Medical Mission at Home: A Day of Free Healthcare a success.

“Our Mission calls us to serve all of those in need of care, but especially the most vulnerable among us,” said Peg Tichacek, Via Christi’s chief mission integration officer. “Last year, we came together with others in our community to serve those who may lack access to basic medical care and to help them get connected with providers so that they can continue to address their health needs. It was a meaningful experience for those being served as well as those providing the care.”
