Via Christi and NAMI raise awareness about mental illness with Candleight Ceremony

Bob Tryanski, an award-winning writer, speaker, and storyteller from Lawrence, Kansas, will be the keynote speaker at the Candlelight Ceremony held each year by the Wichita affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

This year’s event will take place this Sunday, Oct. 7, at Wichita State’s Campus Activity Center Theater and honor those who live or have lost their lives to mental illness and those who love them.

The Via Christi-sponsored event will begin with an art exhibit at 5:30 p.m., followed by an announcement of the youth winners of the Creative Expressions for Mental Health Awareness Original Youth Talent Showcase as Tryanski’s talk, “Out of the Shadows, into the Story.”

The program is being held in conjunction with the beginning of Mental Illness Awareness Week, during which NAMI hopes to educate people about serious mental illness, raise awareness about available services and reduce the stigma of mental health.
