A salute to continuous quality improvement

Ascension Via Christi St. Francis recently hosted nearly three dozen commanders from McConnell’s Air Refueling Wing as part of a week-long Process Improvement Education Series conducted by the Air Force Base.

Carla Yost, Ascension Via Christi’s chief nursing and quality officer, provided the welcome and introduction, followed by presentations by Yost and Melissa Evraets, director of Quality and her team on Lean principles and the A3 methodology of process improvement using the Emergency Department throughput project as an example.

The presentations were followed by small group unit tours and a “waste walk” to observe and offer suggestions on efficiency and quality improvement opportunities.

"This visit significantly enhanced our understanding of Continuous Process Improvement while simultaneously enriching our outstanding community partnership," says Col. B. Philip Heseltine, Jr.

In appreciation, Col. Heseltine presented Yost and Melissa Evraets, system director for Quality, with a challenge coin, given to honor a person for a special achievement.

For Yost, Evraets and the Quality team members and nurse managers who participated, it was an honor to serve as the group's host.
Added Yost: “The coins really belong to everyone serving at Ascension Via Christi for their focus on quality and performance improvement, which leads to a safer environment and better outcomes for patients.”
