Newton couple delivers Wichita’s first baby of the year at Via Christi

Wichita's first baby of the New Year, Layton Busenitz, was born at Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph just 16 minutes after midnight, weighing 7 pounds and five ounces.

Layton was given a New Year's onesie and a matching cap hand-knitted by Wendi Doyle, RN, well known among her Labor and Delivery colleagues for the creative holiday hats she makes for newborns throughout the year. Parents Mandy and Brian Busenitz, also received a basket full of other baby gifts from Via Christi Volunteers, Partners in Caring.

But perhaps the greatest gift, the Newton, Kansas, couple says, was the support and encouragement they received from the NewLife Center team during the almost two days she was in labor.

Says Mandy, who was determined if at all possible to have a vaginal birth after the cesarean delivery of the couple’s now 2-year-old son Darius: “They gave us the gift of time and patience and now we have a healthy baby boy to take home with us as we begin the New Year.”
