National Women’s Health Week: Are you taking care of you?

3 generations women

May 13–19 is National Women's Health Week — established to remind women to make their health a lifelong priority. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health spearheaded this national effort to raise awareness about manageable steps women can take to improve their health and the importance of incorporating simple preventive and positive health behaviors into everyday life.

To support National Women’s Health Week, Ascension Via Christi has outlined some high-priority preventive exams women should keep in mind as they age:

Women in their 20s

  • Get annual physical exam and discuss family health history with your doctor
  • Get first Pap test at age 21 then once every 3 years until age 30
  • Begin getting clinical breast exams every 3 years until age 30
  • Get blood pressure tested annually
  • Have your cholesterol levels tested at age 20 and then every 5 years

Women in their 30s

  • Start co-testing for cervical cancer (Pap smear and HPV test)
  • Start getting clinical breast exams annually

Women in their 40s

  • Get baseline mammogram at age 40 and then get them annually
  • Have blood sugar evaluated starting at age 45, and then every 3 years

Women in their 50s

  • Get baseline bone density screening if at risk
  • Start getting screened for colon cancer

Women in their 60s

  • If eligible through Medicare, individuals age 65 and up should schedule their free ‘Annual Wellness Visit’ – an important benefit that includes a variety of preventive screenings and a thorough review of medications
  • Get osteoporosis screening at age 65

One of the best forms of prevention is to maintain regular visits with your doctor to discuss your health status, family health history, and recommended frequency of services. To find a doctor:
