February is Heart Month and Ascension Via Christi will be joining the American Heart Association in going red all month.
The month is packed with Go Red events, starting Feb. 1 with National Wear Red Day. The Wichita Thunder hockey Go Red game is also Feb. 1, for which free tickets are available at the Wichita Ascension Via Christi gift shops.
February also is the first day of AHA’s “Little Hats, Big Hearts” initiative, where a hand-made knit hat will be given to every baby born at the Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph NewLife Center as part of a national effort to raise awareness of congenital heart defects.
You’ll also want to make plans to attend AHA’s Breakfast in Red, which takes place from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Wichita Airport. In addition to a fun, educational and free breakfast, you’ll receive a goodie bag that includes two free passes to this year’s Women’s Fair, courtesy of Ascension Via Christi. The only catch? You must RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 316-768-3834 by Friday, Feb. 8.
The American Heart Association also will be joining Via Christi at the Women’s Fair, Feb. 15 – 17, providing activities and information geared towards raising overall awareness about women’s health. On Saturday, Via Christi-sponsored speakers will include Jennifer Jackson, MD, whose talk “Food Fight: The Battle is REAL,” will take place at noon Saturday on the main stage, followed by Zonya Foco’s and Krista Sanderson’s 1 p.m. cooking stage presentation, “REAL FOOD! A New Way of Cooking, Eating and Living.” Dr. Jackson is an internal medicine specialist who serves as medical director for Ascension Via Christi’s Heart Failure Disease Management program.
