Helping score a victory for Victory in the Valley

When Maggie Ward was asked to serve as a team captain for Victory in the Valley’s annual East Meets West Walk/Run, she was a little hesitant because of her already jam-packed schedule.

“But it was too much of an honor to pass up,” says Ward, who leads Via Christi’s Cancer Outreach and Risk Assessment program, has three children ages six months to 6 and is actively pursuing her doctor of Nursing Practice degree at Wichita State University.

So she jumped in with the same gusto she brings to her other commitments.

She’s formed a Via Christi team for the event – All For One – and has organized a team fundraiser that will take place from 6–8:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, at Roxy’s in downtown Wichita. Tickets for the event, which will include a silent auction, live music, food and a cash bar, are $30 each and available at

Ward, who describes herself as “a wee bit” competitive, also is leading recruitment of runners, walkers, strollers and spectators for the East team. Although the event includes a competitive run, it’s primary focus is celebrating survivorship and remembering those whose lives have been lost to cancer.

“It’s always an inspirational event that people of all ages and fitness levels can take part in,” she says. “Plus there will be pancakes , sausages, coffee and juice for every person who has registered for any category.”

This year’s half-day event will kick off with a timed 5K at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Exploration Place, followed by a 2K walk at 9:30, half-mile kids’ run at 10:30 and survivors’ stroll at 11.

Proceeds will go to help fund the wide-range of patient and caregiver support groups and programs offered by the non-profit started by Lois Thomi in 1983 and for the past 18 years led by her daughter, Diana.

“Victory in the Valley offers so many services and such tremendous support to our patients, serving as captain seemed like the least I could do to help,” says Ward, who is doing the most she can to ensure that the event is successful.
