Ascension Via Christi will be one of two presenting sponsors for the ninth annual Get Your Rear in Gear 5K run that will take place on Sunday, May 26, at the Farm & Art Market Plaza in Wichita.
J.J. Sorochty, the event’s director, started the event designed to raise colon cancer awareness and funds after her sister Debbie Hernandez Mitchell was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in September 2009.
“Very early on, I discovered that colon cancer is much more prevalent than I initially thought. However, for whatever reason, it is a disease that is not talked about. I have always believed that if colon cancer was openly discussed, maybe we wouldn’t be here today,” says J.J. who enlists friends, family, and anyone willing to help to put on the annual event.
Registration begins at 6 p.m., followed by a 1-mile fun run at 7 and 5K timed run and 5K walk at 7:30 p.m.
Proceeds from the event go to the Colon Cancer Coalition, which has provided more than $50,000 in grants to Ascension Via Christi to fund screenings and help patients newly diagnosed with colorectal cancer access the services they need to battle their disease.
“All too often, people over the age of 45 aren’t aware that they should have a colon cancer screening. And if they do, they may not have the funds to cover the cost,” says Keisha Humphries, service line administrator of Oncology Services for Ascension Via Christi Hospitals. “One of our goals is to decrease the number of cases of colon cancer in Kansas. This grant, made possible by J.J. and Debbie, continues to save lives.”
The event needs walkers, runners and especially volunteers. For more information or to join the Ascension Via Christi All For One team, go to coloncancercoalition.org/Wichita.
