Free Hispanic-focused health fair

Ascension Via Christi is a sponsor for Café con Leche, an annual Hispanic-oriented health and wellness fair that will take place from 8 a.m. – noon, Saturday, Oct. 20, at North High School.

Now in its 18th year, this year’s event will feature free healthcare services such as clinical breast exams and mammograms, dental and vision screenings, flu shots, glucose and cholesterol screenings and fluoride treatments for kids. There also will be information about starting a small business, demos for healthy eating, a community baby shower and interactive activities for children.

“Café con Leche is a great event for anyone interested in health screenings and education, particularly native Spanish speakers,” says insurance navigator Lucy Torres, who represented Via Christi’s Cancer Outreach and Risk Assessment program at last year’s event and will be there again this year. “We’re able to reach so many people in our community who truly need the health resources being offered.”

The event draws an estimated 1,000 participants each year.

Ronda Lusk, RN, Via Christi’s Trauma Outreach and Safe Kids coordinator, also will be there, using the Kohl’s Safe Teen Driver program’s driving simulators to help educate youthful drivers about the dangers of distracted and impaired driving. To volunteer to help with this effort, call Ronda at 316-268-6760 or email her at

Spanish-speakers also are needed to help with the overall event. For more information, contact Michael Aumack at
