Employee Spotlight: Jennifer Boggs, certified breast nurse navigator

In honor of breast cancer awareness month, Via Christi Cancer Center would like to highlight Jennifer Boggs, RN, CN-BN, a certified breast nurse navigator.     

She received her certification as a breast patient navigator in 2016 and has been an employee of Via Christi for 18 years and a registered nurse for the Cancer Center for the last 7 years.  

The National Consortium of Breast Center's goal for the navigator certification program is: “to save the lives of women diagnosed with breast cancer and ensure timely and efficient delivery of breast care/cancer services through quality and excellence in the navigation of a breast patient through their imaging and/or cancer care and treatment.” 

Certification is a reflection of Jennifer’s achievement beyond licensure and exhibits dedication to a specific set of skills to provide enhanced care and services for patients through advanced competency. Via Christi recognized the benefit of helping breast cancer patients and families navigate the healthcare system from screening to diagnosis to treatment to survivorship, according to Melida Adair, RN, OCN, Medical Oncology Nurse Manager at Via Christi Cancer Center.

“We value the commitment that Jennifer has made to helping our patients navigate through the unfamiliar territory of cancer treatment and diagnosis,” she said. “It has allowed us an organization to decrease the time from abnormal mammogram to an appointment with an oncologist when needed to just a few weeks.”

Patients go through all kinds of emotions from fear, anger, anxiety, and stress after a cancer diagnosis, Boggs explained.

“They are overwhelmed with new physicians, new faces, new terms, tests, treatment options," she said. "As a nurse navigator, I can help organize the 'news' and decrease some of the burden to patients.”

One of the most significant barriers breast cancer patients face is the time required to move through the stages of diagnosis to treatment and that part of her role is ensure that the patients make it to the next step in their care in a timely manner and assist with coordinating appointments across the various spectrum of care, she explained.
