CMN Hospitals to make Ascension Via Christi childbirth, family education classes available at no cost to participants

Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph's NewLife Center offers a wealth of childbirth and family education classes designed to help expectant parents and their newborns get off to a healthy start.

Class offerings include childbirth preparation, breastfeeding, infant massage, baby care, sibling and grandparent classes, car seat safety and more, offered at various times throughout each month to ensure parents are prepared for their big day and beyond.

Starting July 1, all those classes will be offered at no charge to participants. Instead, they will be funded by a year-round grant from Children's Miracle Network Hospitals at Ascension Via Christi — removing any financial barrier to parents accessing the support they need to welcome and care for their newborns.

"We want expectant parents’ birth experience personalized to meet their needs," said Laurie Labarca, hospital president. "We believe that starts with being well educated as to what to expect prior to coming to the hospital, during your stay and once you return home."

NewLife Center navigator Toni Howard, RN, who coordinates the childbirth and family education classes and tours, agreed, noting, "The costs of preparing for a new addition to the family can add up quickly, but there is so much value to the classes we offer. Thanks to Children's Miracle Network, parents won't have to weigh the benefit of those classes against what their budget can afford."

Kara Warkentine, who directs Children's Miracle Network Hospitals at Ascension Via Christi, said she's excited to see funds raised locally being used to help ensure that families have access to the care they need.

"We’ve long been known for the help that we provide to sick and injured children throughout Kansas," said Warkentine. "Now every family who delivers at the NewLife Center at St. Joseph will benefit from CMN support."

David Alexander, Ascension Via Christi's vice president of Philanthropy, said it was an easy decision to make.

"Supporting healthy families and healthy babies is at the heart of our mission.”
