Cath, EP lab renovations at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis complete

Ascension Via Christi – long the area’s leader for cardiac procedures – continues to see demand for heart care, making the renovation of its heart catheterization and electrophysiology labs an important investment.

The remodeling of Heart Cath A at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis completes a more than $4 million capital improvement project, done in conjunction with the replacement of labs’ monitoring systems.

“We now have three heart cath labs and two multipurpose labs, giving us the capacity and flexibility to best serve the needs of our patients and the physician specialists who provide their care,” says Dara Valdez, director of the Cath and EP labs.

St. Francis’ heart cath labs are staffed from 6 a.m. – 7 p.m. weekdays, with staff on call 24/7 to ensure that critically ill patients have around-the-clock access to the care they need. Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa also has a cath lab, where the same team performs heart cath procedures as the need arises. Between the two locations, the team treats more than 300 patients, many critically ill, each month.

The cath lab at Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph was consolidated at St. Francis in early 2017, furthering standardization of practice and more efficient use of staff resources, Valdez says.

St. Francis serves as Ascension Via Christi’s heart care hub, featuring a Joint Commission-certified Chest Pain Center and a robust Structural Heart program and Heart Valve Clinic that is on the leading edge of care and research, both nationally and internationally.
