Breast augmentation: A straightforward procedure

Breast augmentation is a straightforward procedure that enhances the size and shape of the breasts, says Mitchell Flurry, M.D.

Breast augmentation is a procedure for women who seek to change the current size, shape or look of their breasts. Women may be interested in this procedure for a variety of reasons such as: breast hypoplasia (small breasts), deflated breast after weight loss or breast-feeding, or breast asymmetry. I often hear that women want to better “fill out” their clothing, “get their body back” after having children, or just feel more confident. Whatever the reason for wanting a breast augmentation, we can help you choose the most appropriate implant base on your individual goals and needs.

During your free consultation, we will discuss your goals and how to best accomplish them. I will then guide you toward the implant that is the best fit for you based on a balance of your individual measurements and the goals you hope to obtain with surgery. We offer a variety of implants including saline, silicone gel, and highly cohesive or “gummy bear” implants. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses and I will discuss what is most important to you.

The actual breast augmentation procedure is typically done through a small incision either under the breast or nipple. The implant is then placed under the skin or under the pectoralis muscle. This fills the breast pocket out and gives a woman a fuller breast increasing the bra cup size. The procedure can also give the breasts a small lift which is beneficial if you breast has some droopiness.

It is usually a quick and easy procedure performed in an outpatient surgery setting (meaning you go home the same day).  After you get home, I have you rest for about two hours and then I recommend you get up and leave the house to go to dinner. Recovery is fairly quick afterwards. Light activity is encouraged the next day after surgery. Light cardio is allowed at 4 weeks and all normal activity is allowed at 6 weeks.

If you have a low impact job, you can typically get back to work within two to five days.

Breast augmentation is a straightforward procedure that enhances the size and shape of the breasts. Most women are very happy with their final result.
