Ascension Via Christi names Beard as its new chief medical officer

Sheryl Beard, MD, a physician with Ascension Medical Group Via Christi, has been named chief medical officer for Ascension Via Christi’s hospitals in Wichita, Manhattan and Pittsburg and Wamego. She will begin her new duties on May 2.

The CMO role previously was held by Sam Antonios, MD, who was promoted to chief clinical officer last September.

Joe Nold, MD, Medical Staff president for Ascension Via Christi Hospitals, Wichita, who has served as interim CMO since November, will serve as associate CMO during the first year of Dr. Beard’s transition to the new role.

As CMO, Dr. Beard will be responsible for executive leadership and direction on hospital clinical matters and supporting Ascension Via Christi Medical Staff. Her work will include a focus on quality measures, improved operating room efficiency and safety, COVID-19 management, and other clinical operational challenges.

Dr. Beard, who joined Ascension Via Christi in 2008, has most recently served as a board-certified family physician at the Ascension Medical Group Via Christi Primary Care Clinic for Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita. She served as senior associate program director of the Ascension Via Christi Family Medicine Residency program from 2009 to 2019 and held numerous leadership positions within Ascension Via Christi Hospitals Wichita Medical Staff, including president in 2014. She was president of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians in 2020 and now serves as the KAFP Board of Directors chairperson. In addition, Dr. Beard has served on the Ascension Via Christi Hospitals Wichita Board of Directors since 2016. 

Dr. Beard received her medical degree from KU School of Medicine-Wichita and completed her Family Medicine Residency at Ascension Via Christi in Wichita. A former Major in the U.S. Air Force, she served from 2002 to 2006 and was stationed at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita. She served a short tour in Northern Iraq at Kirkuk Air Base in 2006. Dr. Beard is an associate professor at the KU School of Medicine-Wichita.
