Ascension Via Christi to be well-represented at Sunday’s Prairie Fire races

More than 2,400 runners have registered so far for the 10th annual Fall Prairie Fire Marathon, Half Marathon, Mayor’s 5K and one-mile Fun Run/Walk that will take place on Sunday, Oct. 13, starting and finishing in front of WAVE, 650 E. 2nd.

Among those signed up are nearly two dozen Ascension Via Christi associates. They will be cheered on by several dozen or more of their teammates who have signed up to volunteer at the event, for which Ascension Via Christi is the presenting sponsor.

Wichita singer Jenny Wood, who was critically injured in a crash that claimed the life of her mother and niece on the same day as the Spring Prairie Fire Marathon, will be singing the “Star Spangled Banner” before the start of the full marathon at 7 a.m.

“For everyone who has not had a chance to hear and be inspired by Jenny and her miraculous recovery, it will be a wonderful opportunity to do so,” says Kevin Strecker, chief operating officer for Ascension Via Christi, who along with Carla Yost, chief nursing and quality officer, will be sounding the horn to start the race. “Her recovery and return to music is a testament to the power of prayer and the healing that takes place both within and beyond the walls of our hospitals.”

If you have not yet signed up to run or volunteer, you can still do so at prairiefiremarathon.com. (Ascension Via Christi associates can receive a special discount by enter the promotional code ASCVIA19 as they finish their registration, but only on this site.)

For every Ascension Via Christi volunteer, the Sports Commission will donate $10 to the Ascension Via Christi One Community campaign plus provide a volunteer shirt.
