Volunteers, patients converge on Wichita park for A Day of Free Healthcare

Latisha Friday knows the importance of keeping kids healthy. She also knows it’s expensive.

So Latisha came to Fairmount Park on Saturday, five children by her side, for A Day of Free Healthcare, a medical mission event led by Via Christi with help from community partners. The children – her two sons and three of their cousins – were seen by a doctor and had a dental screening.

“It’s awesome,” Latisha said. “It’s a big relief to be able to get all these services for free.”

Via Christi breaks ground on new clinic to serve Derby

Ascension Medical Group will be expanding its long-time presence in Derby once construction of the nearly 15,000-square-foot facility on the northwest corner of Tall Tree Road and Newberry Street is complete this fall.

Located just off of a rapidly developing section of Rock Road, the new clinic will integrate primary care and physical therapy and allow Ascension Medical Group to go from four family medicine and pediatric providers to eight.

Five mumps cases detected in Pittsburg

Area health professionals are investigating five cases of mumps in Pittsburg. Onsets of illness occurred in early February. Information is subject to change as investigations continue.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 4,000 mumps cases were reported in the 2016, and mumps outbreaks are ongoing in the nearby states of Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

It's flu season: What you need to know


With the arrival of colder weather also comes the influenza virus, otherwise known as the flu. The flu is a common viral respiratory illness we see year after year in the emergency department.
