‘Get Your Rear in Gear’ for this year’s 5K walk/run

Sisters J.J. Sorochty and Debbie Hernandez Mitchell

Walkers, runners and volunteers are needed for the eighth annual Get Your Rear in Gear – Wichita, a colon cancer awareness 5K run and walk that will take place on Sunday, May 27, at the Farm & Art Market Plaza in Wichita.

“It’s always a lot of fun with great food and a high-energy crowd of survivors and their family members and others whose lives have been touched by this disease,” says Lisa Schmidt, the oncology nurse navigator leading Via Christi’s effort to decrease the number of colon cancer cases in Kansas through prevention and early detection.

Registration begins at 6 p.m., followed by a 1-mile fun run at 7 and 5K timed run and 5K walk at 7:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the event go to the Colon Cancer Coalition, which to date has provided $50,000 in grants to Via Christi to fund screenings and help patients newly diagnosed with colorectal cancer access the services they need to battle their disease.

“Many people over the age of 50 aren’t aware that they should have a colon cancer screening,” says Keisha Humphries, service line administrator of Oncology Services for Ascension Via Christi Hospitals. “Once they gain that awareness, it’s important that we as a community do all that we can to remove any barriers to getting the care they need.”

Via Christi’s grant from Get Your Gear – Wichita helps provide colonoscopies and colon cancer screenings for the uninsured and underinsured in Wichita.

“So many people are affected by the financial stresses that cancer brings,” says event director J.J. Sorochty, pictured here with her sister, Debbie Hernandez Mitchell, who is a colon cancer survivor. “We’re committed to helping alleviate that stress using the money raised at our annual event.”

Debbie was diagnosed in September 2009 with stage IV colon cancer at the age of 42, and had no family history of the disease. The sisters started Get Your Rear in Gear – Wichita as a way of raising awareness about colon cancer.
